Kanchen Gola Wild 2002 - Kanchenjunga North side

We were now in the main Kanchenjunga trekking region, the north side, and visited Pangpema (base camp).
We debated where to explore; Filip went north to successfully explore the pass to Sikkim,
our trekkers almost made it into Broken Glacier and the climbers explored around
the Jannu Base Camp region.

Wedge Peak is dominating from Lhonak.

This is the view that most people trek the Kanchenjunga region for, the view from Pangpema.
Kanchenjunga is a fearsome mountain with no easy way up. It was first climbed from this side.

There is a 6000m viewpoint with an even more stunning panorama, and it is only a walk up.

Now we move to the Jannu Base Camp area, a region neglected by most trekkers since it is barely mentioned in the
Lonely Planet trekking guide to Nepal. Our camp only got a few hours of sunlight in this steep-sided valley.

The small ridge behind our camp had a spectacular backdrop.

Our aim was to explore what is loosely called Mera Peak on the map, a complex set of peaks.

And we got to a subsidiary summit with breathtaking views.

All that trekking requires real food, here a leg of yak is getting chopped up.

This was our last wilderness camp, utterly idyllic. Then we headed back down into the middle
hills and then home.
