Kanchen Gola Wild 2002 - high country exploring

After adventures in the middle hills we acclimatized at Yangma and then explored higher.
We went literally off the map to the top of the trading pass with Tibet, not everyone making it
the first time so we mounted a second trip there for the trekkers while the climbers explored
a hill that had more challenge than we expected.

Here was our wonderful base camp on a grassy plain with mountains ringing us.
We ate breakfast and lunch outside, dinner in our warm dining tent.

We spent around a week based here, exploring and climbing.

This is one of my favourite shots, Richard, Filip and Joel atop the 5700m trading pass, late in the day.
Joel returned here with Jeff and Heidi, camping near the shores of the lake below before climbing the pass again.

Meanwhile the boys (above) headed up to the camp below for a spot of mountaineering exploration.
Due to a combination of surprises there was no summit, only descent in darkness.

An avalanche we witnessed from base camp.
