Manaslu or Kanchenjunga?

Our Manaslu and Kanchenjunga treks are comparable, what are the differences?

The differences

Both are camping treks, and some of the best treks Nepal has to offer.

Kanchenjunga has wilder scenery and while we trek thru some picturesque villages Manaslu has even more cultural and beautiful traditional villages. You can't go wrong with either.

The Manaslu trek is shorter, significantly so if the shortest route is used. Kanchenjunga treks take time, no matter what, and extra time should be allowed for flight delays etc.

Because Manaslu starts with a bus journey, it is slightly cheaper and there is significantly less chance of delays. Have extra time available during and after teh trek for the Kanchenjunga region.

So Manaslu or Manaslu & Nar-Phu? The longer trek really is a once in a lifetime experience, definitely do the longer trip if you have time.

If it comes down to a choice between the Manaslu and Kanchenjunga, do you want more culture - Manaslu - or more mountains, remoteness and that high grassy alpine valleys feel - Kanchenjunga. Whatever you choose you are looking at two of the best treks in Nepal, both are cultural and feature glorious mountains.

Ornella says

Ornella has trekked both with us:

"On a side note, I thoroughly enjoyed the Manaslu, Nar and Phu trek, completely different to Kanchenjunga, but equally enjoyable. Nar and Phu were definite focal points, each different to one another, but both extremely remote and the settings were austere, but strikingly beautiful. It's a harsh life those villagers lead in some very inhospitable environment, but it does not dampen their spirits.

I loved that we didn't see many trekkers heading into that area. Wonderful weather, wonderful views of Manaslu, Annapurnas, Dhaulagiri...we were so incredibly lucky to have had excellent weather! It was a shock when we hit the Annapurna area to see so many people....(snob talking here) having to face human traffic going over the Thorung La!!!"
