To North Col

Our 2010 Project Himalaya Everest Expedition 8848m dispatches

We climb up to North Col for acclimatization

3 May - Sherpa load carry

The crew have already carried up plenty of oxygen, but there is still more to go. So another set of loads...

4 May - up to North Col

Barry and myself climbed up to North Col. Barry's quote:

"Everything up 'til clipping into the ropes is just a warm up"

and, yes, climbing North Col is a significant notch up - welcome to the real mountain.

4 May: a small crevasse, but potentially nasty all the same.
The snow bridge should hold, and I have a safety line as backup anyway - Jamie

Kaji, Bali, Nima Gurman, Nawang Geden, Pemba Kitar

3 May: Kaji, Bali, Nima Gurman, Nawang Geden and Pemba Kitar about to take a load to North Col - Jamie

A wide shot of climbers ascending

Ascending the ropes to North Col; ABC is in the centre, slightly upper left, where the rock meets the snow - Jamie

THE serac

The old way under the serac to the right, now covered in ice blocks, and the still dangerous serac above it;
our new route is to the left now, climbing above it - Jamie

Barry on the ropes

Barry (right) on a traverse before a short moderately steep climb - Jamie

crossing a short ladder

It is possible to jump but easier with a ladder and a safety line - Jamie
