2018 Kanchenjunga trek vignettes

Bruce Utsey loved his trek in the Kanchenjunga region. Opening with some noise, here are some thoughts on the trek.

2017 Zanskar: a new cycle touring and trekking mecca?

With a tear and many memories, I trekked across the Shingo La for one last time with a team in 2016. There was already a rough road to the top; all is not lost though, there are exciting opportunites developing for both trekkers and cycle touring. Find out more!

The 2014 Cyclone Hudhud disaster

A quick deficiencies analysis

A huge and powerful cyclone equivalent to a category 3 (/4?) hurricane with an overall diameter of 2000km hit India and then predicably travelled inland and dumped huge quantities of rain and snow on the Himalaya, trashing the Annapurna area in particular. Around 50 people died directly as a result, around a third foreign trekkers and the rest local guides and porters and trekking crew. All this death was preventable but here is why Nepal failed.

Likir Gompa, Ladakh: Monk's robes. In another hall we were privileged to sit in a ceremony but I feel guilty wandering around snapping and prefer to be 'in the moment' with the chanting. Luckily, this hall was empty, so we had the best of both worlds. I do wonder though, how long places like this will thrive, rather than just survive. The entrance fee was a mere 20 rupees, 28 US cents, similar to many monasteries in the Ladakh region. I always leave considerably more but if tourists use that as a guideline, even doubling or tripling that charge amounts to very little. Perhaps a ticket system that charges one or two hundred rupees, waiving the fee from anyone who complains, might be better? #ProjectHimalaya #WhereWouldYouRatherBe
