Northern Ireland Everest Expedition 2003
Kathmandu to base camp

Ten years after the first ascent by an Irishman, there was the first Northern Ireland Everest Expedition.

Most of the pictures were taken with a Minolta 7i digital camera, touched up in Adobe ImageReady.

Our small bit of culture at Nyalam Gompa. We stayed in Nyalam two nights to help acclimatization.

Luckily when you are driving the sides of the road don't seem quite as steep as they are. The gorge leaving Zhangmu for the climb to Nyalam is probably one of the most breath-taking there is.

On the fourth day from Kathmandu we cross our first pass, the 5150m Lalung La. Shishapangma dominates the background.

Taken when driving out this is the captivating panorama of the valley that leads to Shishapangma and to Kailash.

After another day acclimating in Tingri/Dingri, we cross our second pass, the Pang La where we had great views of the Himalaya.

Tibetans transporting a shop's worth of supplies, and yak herds' worth of grass.

Driving out at the end of the expedition it snowed hard,
the weather was unpredictable until the last minute.
