Base Camp

Finally our travel holiday is over when the expedition arrives at Everest Base Camp

23 April - to Everest Base Camp

The dirt road began soon after Shegar (this will be rebuilt this year in time for 2008...) and began the long zig zag climb to the pass. The view from the top, our first real Everest view, jaw-dropping! Everest rises far, far above everything else, even dwarfing Makalu (#5), Cho Oyu (#6) and Gyachung Kang (#15). It brought a lump to the climbers' throats! See the banner photo above too.

Everest, our first real view - Jamie

We meet the climbing sherpas and other crew

We have arrived at BC, 5150m. Everyone made it to Base Camp and feels surprisingly good, especially after a non-Chinese food lunch. Sandwiches, spam, chips and coleslaw! It is time for us to relax and get used to the altitude, it is a 800m jump from Shegar (hence why we stayed two nights there).

The sherpa crew are in perfect condition, not a cold, and no sickness. Namgyal has a new camera, courtesy Lance Trumbull of the Everest Peace Project, the latest 7.1 megapixel Canon with the best case for climbing, extra lithium batteries and 2GB card.

The next job, after sorting gear, is a team page so that you know who is climbing what...
