Kanchen Gola Wild Exploratory

Tumlingtar - Milke Danda - Topke Gola - Thudam - Lumbasamba - Olangchung Gola - Tumlingtar

The golden age of exploration dead? Never! This is a exploratory trek that would warm Tilman's heart. There is nobody else on the planet who organizes adventures quite like this. A positive, can-do attitude and smile required.

This is our seventh 42 day special - I'm already salivating. The previous treks have been just the best, adventurous and real exploration. However one wild trail rebuffed us twice, each time later in the season so this time we will start with it.

Outline Itinerary

I will plan the itinerary at a later date, when I have a good map in front of me. The first half of the trek in on trails that few foreigners have ever used. We will either spend some time photo-hunting snow leopard, or trying a 6000m peak.

Day 1 - Arrive Kathmandu 1350m

2 - Kathmandu sightseeing

3 - fly Tumlingtar, stay Khandbari

We fly to Tumlingtar then take the rough bus to Khandbari, the district headquarters, where we meet the crew.

4-6 - middle hills trekking

At the first camp we hope for an Everest and Makalu sunrise, the next two camps are likely to be in villages.

7-11 - Milke Danda

We trek along the Milke Danda, a ridge dotted with lakes and with awesome views of Everest, Makalu and other huge mountains. It is a also a biologically diverse area and wile parts of it are sometimes used for grazing, it really is very remote. We will probably have one rest day on the ridge, if everything is going smoothly.

12-35

We reach remote Topke Gola and resupply then head over to that ultra-remote village, Thudam. After a quick Tibet border check (not possible to cross) then we head over the Lumbasamba, exploring a little near the top, and reach the wonderful village of Olangchung Gola.

The Nango La calls, and we reach Ghunsa. After a quick jaunt up to Kanchenjunga North Base Camp we cruise down to Basantapur for the bus to Biratnagar or perhaps hop over the ridge again and fly from Tumlingtar.

36 - Gupha Pokhari

37 - mid-village

38 - Chainpur

39 - Khandbari / Tumlingtar

Beautiful middle hills, hot too, even in winter but the lodges have fridges for cold beer! We don't pre-book our flights instead turn up and go, there is normally space. Or not turn up, depending where we are!

40 - fly Kathmandu

41 - Kathmandu

Day 42 - depart
